I asked a Councillor a few weeks ago in Ilford as to what the Council could do to help the shop-keepers who say the Uniform Business Rates are too high and the rents also.
Upto 14 shops are closing in English cities each day, according to some recent study.
Nothing, the Councillor told me. The rent is to do with landlords, not the Council.
The Uniform Business Rates are set by Central Government, not the local Council.
I hope the powers that be can help the shop-keepers survive by reducing rents and reducing the UBR. The High Streets need saving.
With so many shop closures and people becoming unemployed, it will place additional burdens on social security.
I hope landlords and Central Government will take note of this and do what is necessary.
In eager anticipation.
