Christ came to my heart when I was 13 years old.
I was born in a Hindu household. My Father was a devout believer in the cause of doing good, and inspring our household with pictures of Hindu dieties.
But one day somebody gave me a comic book about Christ. In it, there is a scene where Joseph and Mary go looking for Jesus. They find him in a temple. "I am in God's house. Where else would I be?" asks Jesus.
That devout picture of Jesus and his love and trust in God stayed in my heart. At that impressionable age, I too wanted to be like Christ.
My Father died in 1972, in Nairobi, Kenya, and my family travelled to England and we settled in Ilford.
In 1974 the message of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Golden Plates reached me, through two priests from Utah, Elder Miles and although I forget the name of the second one, I can still remember his smiling face with golden glasses.
Many year later, on 2nd November of 2011, in Ilford, I met Elder Montgomery and Elder White. They invited me to the Ilford church, and my heart felt glad at the friendly welcome I received in this family church.
The elders visited me at home, and we read the Scriptures and discussed the message. They told me about baptism.
I prayed in my heart for my Father's guidance. He said Yes, go ahead, Duru, be baptised, go where your heart is happy...
So, after careful consideration and overcoming some resistance, I agreed to take the vow of chastity, agreed as a sign of obedience to the law of tithing, and promised not to smoke or take drinks with caffeine. I was baptized by immersion in water on a freezing cold January evening this year. The water was quite warm, I may add, and I felt very happy at being baptised.
The gift of the Holy Ghost has been a great companion, a guiding force to good counsel and courage.
From a shy, timid person, I have started to grow further in confidence, hoping and praying that God will enable me live my life's purpose, and fulfill the promise God has entrusted to my heart, to be like Jesus and spread His words and His light.
All this I say and pray in the name of our Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus the Christ.
