It was bitterly cold here in London that weekend. The gas pressure in many households was low. I was switching the central heating for ten minutes every hour or so, hoping other people would do the same and the whole system in the country would not go down.
In some English and European cities, gas was down, with supplies down. In Germany and other places, the temperatures were even more severe.
I heard of the reason causing the crisis. It was the gas coming from Russia via Riga; there was something about the agreement between those two countries blocking the supply of gas to Europe. It was pretty cold, there was the concern that a lot of especially older people may perish if something was not done, and quick. There was no time.
I was doing my market research job in London, going house to house. I met some people from Eastern Europe. I mentioned this matter to them. "Who can do something about this?" I asked. "Two people : The Russian leader and Yulia Tymoshenko".
"The one with the golden ponytails like a crown..."
"The very one"
"Can't you send a message to them to open the taps, and let the gas through? Otherwise a lot of people will die of cold".
Within few hours, I heard the taps were open, and everything was okay.
I will always think of those people as great humanitarians, and I pray they can release Yulia, who is a true heroine to lot of people who would have otherwise suffered in the cold.
